Molasses Slow
Written by an Image Bearer of the Living God.

When the words are slow
like molasses:
Squeezed from the cane
through a smooth,
wooden,
hand-carved chute
by the circular power
of a team working.
A Jack and
a Molly.
Frothy, green juice
heated to boil
and boil and boil and boil.
Then, dark and thick
through the spigot dripped
into waiting jars:
Mason,
jelly,
pickle,
anything glass.
And all I can think of
are Grandma’s hands
that held the fork
that combed through the butter.
The mashed union
of cane and cow offerings,
smeared on Momma’s biscuits.
And the look on Grandma’s face
as she closed her eyes
and chewed.
Real slow-like.
Don’t miss the savor for the rush, child.
Molasses slow words
-goodly words.
Just close your eyes
and chew.
